What is our country’s role in the world? How does our foreign policy affect trade, migration, conflict and environmental issues? How are the political and social trends in our nation reflected around the globe?

Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs. The course model involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book on your own (approx. 15 pages a week), watching a 30 minute documentary together, then discussing what we have learned. This 9 week course, created by the Foreign Policy Association to educate the public about current events, includes the following topics for 2025:

  • Mandatory Orientation -- Monday, January 27, 6-7:30pm (course materials will be distributed at this time)
  • American Foreign Policy at a Crossroads
  • US Changing Leadership of the World Economy
  • US-China Relations
  • India: Between China, the West, and the Global South
  • International Cooperation on Climate Change
  • The Future of Nato and European Security
  • AI and American National Security
  • After Gaza: American Policy in the Middle East

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!  Registration will open at 8am on Thursday, January 2 on this same webpage. All participants must have an active Summit County Library card. Library cards are free for Summit County residents/employees and $25/year for nonresidents. Class size is limited to 30 participants, first come first served.

All classes will be held in the Auditorium of the Kimball Junction Branch Library. Due to the popularity of this program, we ask that participants commit to attending a minimum of 6 classes in addition to the Mandatory Orientation. We will meet on consecutive Mondays, 6-7:30pm starting January 27 and ending March 31, but no class on  February 17 (Presidents' Day). Class participation and diverse viewpoints are welcome! Please contact Murph at smurphy@summitcountyutah.gov or 435-336-3069 if you have any questions.
